Biography

My focus is a contemporary portrayal of the landscape, using a layered monotype technique to explore the color, light, and form that characterize places and places through time. My focus is a contemporary portrayal of the landscape, using a layered monotype technique to explore the color, light, and form that characterize places and places through time. I work from memories, photographs, and the idea that appreciation of the natural world is something that unites humanity. My work touches on nostalgia, human experience with place, and the changing landscape as effected by climate change. As an artist I see my role as a recorder of landscapes past, present, and future. I feel strongly called to present work that asks viewers to think about the landscapes that surround us, that are important to us with regards to history and survival, and that are in peril due to our actions and choices. My layered process speaks to the passage of time and the evolution of a landscape. Edges and texture hint at the past. Fragments of previously used colors migrate across the print, connecting the layers and emphasizing a progression. The plate edge is visible suggesting the shutter of a camera, photomontage, or impressions taken through time or space or from different vantage points or through different eyes. A history reveals itself in the details of the work, just as there would be in reading the natural environment. Everyone who passes through a place leaves their mark and records their own memory. I believe landscapes tell complex stories to any who are patient enough to listen. These shared impressions define the places we know and inspire connections to the land, preservation efforts, and environmental action. My work strives to remind viewers that we are stewards of this world and that it is worth saving.
