1959: Born in Canton, China 1973–1976: Member of Youth Association of Art in Canton; winner in National High School art competition 1974–1985: Studied and practiced at Dongyu Chen's studio; student of Professors Lau Sing and Su Urlong 1980–1985: Designer for the Southern China Institute of Landscape Architectural Design, focusing on architecture and landscape architecture 1985: Moved to the United States 1993: Master's Degree in Fine Art and Design at Pratt Institute in New York City 1994–Present: Ongoing exhibit at Robert Paul Galleries, featuring original paintings and canvas transfers Publication: Thirteen paintings published and introduced by Classic Collections. Artist Statement In his paintings, Charles splashes his imagination on with oil colors, lights up the canvas with broad brush strokes, and delves into articulate details with brushes and paint knives. Oil is an excellent medium for expressing a riot of glorious color and texture. Charles favors this classical medium, having evolved from Chinese ink, watercolors, and gouache to impressionist oil painting. To capture the magic of the countryside to perfection, Charles repeatedly observes every scene that has touched his heart. He studies and photographs the same view at various times of day and in different seasons. "I aim to reveal the changes of color, the light and shade of the scene," Charles says. "I try to collect as much information as I can to strengthen my work." Charles completes his paintings in his studio, striving to seize the moments he has experienced with feeling and to transmit the infinite natural essence onto the canvas.
